State Superintendent of Public instruction Tony Thurmond has announced Robert Elliott Alternative Education Center as one of 31 schools in California and the only school in Stanislaus County to be named as a 2024 California Model Continuation High School. This is the first time Elliott has been selected as a Model Continuation School in the campus’s nearly 45-year history. It was chosen for its diverse array of programs designed to help students attain their high school diplomas and actively participate in their education, as well as for the support it receives from the district office, such as funds to build a new multipurpose room and shop to house a new, innovative green energy career pathway.
“We are so proud to be recognized as a model program,” said Modesto City Schools Superintendent Dr. Sara Noguchi. “This accolade not only reflects the commitment of our exceptional, forward-thinking teachers and staff but also celebrates the relentless dedication to excellence shown by every one of our students.”
Elliott Alternative Education Center underwent a rigorous selection process that included a detailed application, data analysis, and an on-site evaluation by a panel of peers. State Superintendent Thurmond noted that schools like Elliott are crucial in supporting students both academically and personally, serving as models of success for continuation education.
“Elliott Alternative Education Center stands as a beacon of hope,” said Principal Sarah Cox. “Our students arrive seeking a fresh start and a supportive environment to fulfill their high school graduation requirements and secure their diplomas. Our dedicated and innovative staff is committed to helping them overcome any educational obstacles they encounter.”
Elliott provides an education tailored to its students’ unique academic and socio-emotional needs with programs such as The Modesto Technical School, Modesto Engineering Industrial and Technical School (MEITS), Health Science Careers, Arts Media and Entertainment, Construction Trades, Leadership, the SOAR to Success orientation, and a 5th-year Senior Program. A strategic partnership with Modesto Junior College also allows Elliott students to engage in college-level courses that contribute to their success long after high school.
Model Continuation High Schools like Elliott Alternative Education Center also provide flexible scheduling, guidance and counseling services, facilitating a pathway to graduation for students who experience challenges in traditional educational settings.
